The Dan River Year AmeriCorps Program's mission is to improve science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) outcomes for the region's citizens including K-12 students, adult learners, and job seekers in our region.

  • About Us
The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research through the Dan River AmeriCorps Program enrolls members to support southern Virginia’s interest in improving science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) outcomes for the region’s citizens, primarily focusing on K-12 students, job seekers and incumbent workers in Halifax County, Pittsylvania County, Henry County, Patrick County, and the cities of Martinsville and Danville. Our goals are to increase STEM enrichment opportunities, student and adult learner improvements in STEM skills, expand opportunities for STEM career exploration, and an increase the number of community volunteers. The DRY AmeriCorps members are responsible for improving math and computer literacy for disadvantaged students and adults through tutoring, educational workshops, and outreach. In addition, AmeriCorps members leverage an additional 510 volunteers who will be engaged in supporting STEM enrichment, career development and skill acquisition programs.
  • Our Impact
Our program focuses on strengthening and impacting our community by providing tutoring services in the primary STEM subjects where students struggle the most, conducting educational workshops and classes to build math and computer literacy, and aiding community members as STEM career coaches to aid in workforce development. Members also organize and participate in many community service projects such as City Beautification, School Supply Drives, natural disaster relief and much more. In our first year alone our members worked with over 400 students, spent approximately 8,000 hours tutoring, and organized community projects that touched nearly 3,000 lives.
