The mission of Compass AmeriCorps is to provide universal access to educational and social services for diverse populations in order to empower them to achieve self-sufficiency. We will foster a spirit of civic engagement among corps and community members.

  • About Us
Compass AmeriCorps is a State AmeriCorps program managed by Literacy Pittsburgh (formerly Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council). Our 20 members are placed in nonprofits throughout Allegheny County that have a mission of empowering newly resettled refugees, immigrants and internationals with the tools necessary to help them to adjust to a new culture and way of life. Through providing case management, wrap-around social services support, career development, health care access, and English as a Second Language instruction, members have a direct impact on refugees and immigrants in the city of Pittsburgh. Members also plan and participate in community service projects, professional development, and service reflection as a team throughout the year. Compass AmeriCorps offers both members and those they serve a life-changing 11 months.
  • Our Impact
In a term of service, the AmeriCorps members will be mainly responsible for providing job placement services (including English as a Second Language instruction) in order to place immigrant and refugee individuals in jobs. Members also provide a wide array of wrap-around social services for Pittsburgh's international community, including case management, health care access, early childhood education, youth mentoring, legal and citizenship services, and more, depending on their service site placement.
