This position supports juniors by providing ACT/SAT test preparation and work with students on an individual basis providing subject specific assistance. Guide seniors as they complete the college application process including: essay writing, applications for admission, scholarships, and the FAFSA.

Service Activities

Service members in the High School Coach Position will work directly with a cohort of 40 high school junior or seniors to support them through the college admission process, beginning with test prep skills in their junior year and guidance through the college application, scholarship application, college decision and financial aid processes in the senior year.

This will primarily be delivered through after school sessions occurring four nights a week. Members will also assist with event programming, including campus visits, community service, opportunity fairs, college fairs and end of year celebration events for students that will occur throughout the week and occasionally on weekends.

Members will also receive an in depth three week training and orientation with the team, along ongoing training throughout the year, with specific position training sessions occurring each Friday throughout the service year.

Community Need Addressed

This position will aid low income students in developing the skills necessary to gain admission to and succeed in college. Currently only 8% of low income students graduate from college, while their middle and high income peers graduate at rates above 60%.

Position Outcomes

Through this year of direct service, depending on whether you are serving with high school juniors or seniors, you will achieve either a 21% score increase on the ACT/SAT (juniors), or you will assist 98% of your class in gaining admission to college (seniors).
