Bon Secours Volunteer Ministry, sponsored by the Sisters of Bon Secours, provides the opportunity for women and men to participate in the Sisters’ commitment to justice in radical solidarity with the poor, the suffering, and those most in need. By sharing the Bon Secours charism of compassion, healing, and liberation, the ministry nurtures and sustains individuals in their personal and communal journeys towards transformation through service with others.

To nurture this transformative journey, Bon Secours Volunteer Ministry supports individuals through a year of spiritual formation. The ministry is structured with five pillars that support this growth. Volunteers commit to: grow spiritually, develop an intentional community, live simply, practice God’s justice, and learn through service with others. Throughout this year, volunteers discover that by sharing the charism of compassion, healing, and liberation with others they, in turn, receive the charism from those they serve.

  • About Us
Bon Secours Volunteer Ministry (BSVM) is a year-long, faith-based service program that goes from August 2023-July 2024. Volunteers live in intentional community with fellow young adults (typically aged 21-25) and receive a lot of support from BSVM staff. BSVM is intentionally small with 4-6 volunteers in each house, and volunteers commit to: grow spiritually, live simply, learn through service with others, develop community, and practice God’s justice.

In addition to living in intentional community, our volunteers serve full time in various public health, education, and social service roles within the Bon Secours Mercy Health System in Baltimore, MD or Richmond, VA. They live within walking distance of their placement sites or have transportation available. Hospital placements can include serving as patient liaisons in Behavioral Health, in the Emergency Department, or on the Inpatient Unit. Roles addressing the social determinants of health have included a mobile health clinic assistant, conducting health screenings with Seniors, and teaching nutrition classes alongside a nurse in a public health role. Finally, applicants interested in education may serve in an Early Head Start Classroom, Sisters Academy Middle School, or Cristo Rey Richmond High School. Applicants interested in social services can work in Housing and Community Development, in Urban Farming, and in a Community Resource Center.

Our placements are distinctive in that our volunteers spend 80% of their time working directly with patients, students, or clients. Administrative tasks are kept to a minimum and the focus instead is on relationship building and being present to patients. No formal training is required to join.

Bon Secours Volunteer Ministry provides housing, health insurance, transportation, a monthly stipend, and assistance with loan deferment. It is an incredible opportunity for those who have a desire to continue their commitment to service, faith, and justice in a supportive environment. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis from late fall through spring, with an early decision deadline of January 15 and submission deadlines on the 15th of each month thereafter. • Our Impact
We are a small, focused, intentional community. We radically love our neighbors and know that our ministry volunteers both extend and receive compassion, healing, and liberation.

The Sisters of Bon Secours have had a presence in Southwest Baltimore and Richmond for many years. This means there are well-established relationships already formed in the communities in which volunteers live and serve. This commitment to the local communities of Southwest Baltimore and East Richmond is the reason why we have chosen for our volunteers to live in the same neighborhood where they serve.
