Community Need Addressed

Sexual and domestic violence and stalking are pervasive social problems that significantly hinder a victim’s ability to engage in a productive and economically successful life. Violence not only comes in the form of physical and emotional injury, but abusers also use financial and economic abuse to control victims, such as maintaining exclusive control over the household finances, preventing and/or sabotaging the victim’s employment, and ruining their partner’s credit and ability to secure independent and safe housing.

Position Outcomes

Members will seek to increase the economic opportunities of victims, as well as enhance financial literacy, as a means to empower victims to create safe and stable futures for themselves and their children. As a result of the power and control that is inherent in domestic and sexual violence and stalking, victims often do not know or understand what housing and financial options are available to them or how to access these services. The meaningful information and referrals that AVAP members will provide to victims will open the door to housing and financial opportunities that they previously did not know existed and/or did not know how to access.
