HIRTA Community Outreach VISTA

Volunteer Iowa
No listings recruiting at this time

The VISTA will conduct outreach and research with the community- both HIRTA riders and non-riders. The VISTA will compile the data collected through this research and share the stories in a compelling way. The information gathered by the VISTA will tell the stories of those served to increase awareness and advocacy efforts of the organization.

Service Activities

Contact users and non-users by phone, email, through meetings, and other means. Compile information, create marketing materials and content to best tell HIRTA's story.

Community Need Addressed

Heart of Iowa Regional Public Transit (HIRTA) provides public transit services to the Central Iowa Counties of Boone, Dallas, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Story, and Warren. Ridership is increasing since the start of the pandemic, however, we need to increase our capacity to reach communities historically underrepresented and under-served.

Position Outcomes

The VISTA project will focus on outreach and engagement with people who ride HIRTA, and also with those who don't. The VISTA will capture the personal stories of the benefits and barriers transit has on their quality of life, and what they can and can't do because of transportation limitations in their area. These real life stories and the data collected will be used to effectively communicate the very real needs of these community members through advocacy efforts with local, state and federal government officials to help them understand transit is about people and not buses. Law makers and funders need to hear about the importance of transit from their own constituents so that these services can be more accessible to our most vulnerable neighbors.
