In Washington State, 44.7% of 4th graders are not proficient readers, a skill that is essential for success in later grades and beyond. One way to address this disparity is through one-on-one and small group literacy tutoring for students in Pre-K through 4th grade. Early literacy tutoring not only improves assessment scores, but may also positively affect grades, long-term educational outcomes, self-image, and perceptions about personal futures.

Members focus on tutoring low-income and ELL struggling readers in high-needs schools and early learning centers in an effort to decrease the statewide opportunity gap in literacy and reading proficiency.

Service Activities

WRC members:
• Provide classroom pull-out or push-in literacy tutoring
• Facilitate literacy activities during lunch or recess, and in after-school programs
• Organize events and activities to help support literacy
• Recruit and/or manage additional literacy volunteers from the community

Community Need Addressed

Washington Reading Corps focuses on serving Pre-K through Grade 4 students who are not reading at grade level in under-served areas across Washington. Through early literacy intervention, WRC aims to help set these students up for success now and in the future.

Position Outcomes

Pre-K students will increase their readiness to enter Kindergarten.

Elementary school students grades 1-4 will meet or exceed reading and literacy grade-level standards, or achieve 11 months of academic growth within the 10-month school year.
