Virginians love to serve! More than 2 million Virginia residents volunteer in their communities every year. This spirit of volunteerism is reflected in our support of National Service across the Commonwealth. Virginia is the first state in the nation where the higher education community has come together to commit to integrating service years on their campuses. More than 50 higher education institutions, including all Virginia public colleges and community colleges, have committed to service year support tactics, including creating service year opportunities for students, linking service to academic credit, and more. Virginia understands that when our young people are engaged in their communities, we can make incredible things happen and solve our greatest challenges!

Who Are We?

Since 1994, nearly 15,000 Virginia residents have served more than 20 million hours in National Service programs across the state. The Virginia Office on Volunteerism and Community Services oversees 20 AmeriCorps State programs with nearly 600 AmeriCorps members in programs addressing education, poverty, veterans and military families, the environment and more! These members committed 170,000 hours of service and recruited more than 8,000 volunteers last year. Our AmeriCorps programs serve members by creating jobs and providing pathways to opportunity for young people entering the workforce. Thousands of young adults get the job experience they need from their intensive service positions where they learn valuable work skills, earn money for education, and develop an appreciation for citizenship.
