LOOP NOLA provides positive, life-changing outdoor experiences for children and youth in Greater New Orleans. LOOP NOLA exists to make the outdoors more equitable for underserved, urban children and youth so everyone can experience the physical and mental health benefits of outdoor recreation along with the joy and awe that are created in natural spaces. For generations, access to public lands and outdoor recreation has systemically excluded people of color. It is our belief that to dismantle these systems of exclusion and create equity it is critical that everyone has access to and feels ownership of outdoor spaces. We accomplish this by creating outdoor programs that allow youth to explore, learn, and develop a sense of ownership in the outdoors. During the 2017-18 school year, we provided 13,000 hours of outdoor programs to 2,500 participants. Over sixty-five percent of participants were from open admission public schools with a majority of their students receiving free or reduced meals.
The Outdoor Adventure AmeriCorps Coach will assist LOOP NOLA staff members with outdoor adventure programming during the school day for New Orleans elementary, middle, and high school students. Outdoor programs will be held in public parks in and around the city and will focus on developing set social, emotional, and academic skills through outdoor recreation activities. Activities include hiking, challenge course participation, canoeing, overnight camping, fishing, and other outdoor adventures. The Outdoor Adventure Coach will be responsible for facilitating the programs through guided discussions and diverse debrief strategies while focusing on safety and inclusivity throughout. He/She will also assist in developing activities that meet set objectives and that are innovative, creative, and engaging. He/She will help with the preparation and break down of equipment and supplies needed before and after programming. The Outdoor Adventure Coach will also learn and teach several outdoor technical skills and learn about and manage the outdoor gear and equipment we utilize during programs.
Additionally, the AmeriCorps Up2Us Coach will:
• Encourage participants to gain and develop life skills, knowledge, and techniques through sport, using lessons learned at Up2Us Sports’ best in class training events
