Turn 2 Us (T2U) is a School Based Mental Health Promotion & Prevention Program in partnership with NYP, Derek Jeter’s Turn 2 Foundation, Columbia University’s Community Pediatrics and local elementary schools. We provide yearlong services that promote well-being and student academic success to all students, school staff, and parents. We joined forces with the Up2Us Sports coalition to host an AmeriCorps Up2Us Coach from Sept 2017 -June 2018.

This is an opportunity to participate in the national service movement, using sports for social change! As an AmeriCorps member you will serve as a mentor and role model. You will teach physical fitness, leadership, and sport specific skills while relaying health and nutrition information and leading service-learning activities. As a Coach/Physical Activity Leader, your role addresses some of our nation’s most pressing needs such as childhood obesity, academic failure, and poor well-being.

Duties include:
1. Turn 2 Us Coach: coach 4th & 5th graders in basketball and baseball. This includes afterschool practices, games, and travel to the games;

2. T2U Healthy Lifestyles League: create schedules, assist in season champion games and awards ceremonies;
3. Recess Mentorship: co-lead a 10-week mentorship group (wish a social work intern) to social/emotional growth and academic success promote in your players. Training will be provided to you and topics include problem-solving, positive coping and leadership skills;
4. School-Site Healthy Lifestyles Initiatives: Assist T2U team in assemblies and workshops that promote healthy lifestyle practices, anti-bullying, test-readiness, and stress management skills;

5. Staff Wellness Initiatives: Assist in implementing quarterly wellness event for school personnel/parents before or after school (volleyball game, zumba, etc.);
6. Student Monitoring and Program Evaluation: Assist with student measures and data input.

Additionally, the AmeriCorps Up2Us Coach will:
•Encourage participants to gain and develop life skills, knowledge, and techniques through sport,using lessons learned at Up2Us Sports’ best in class training events
•Perform data collection activities such as directed by your Up2Us Sports Program Manager
•Act as a role model, gaining the respect and trust of the community and youth served
Up2Us AmeriCorps Coaches must complete the following requirements to ensure successful completion of the AmeriCorps program:
•Completion of the minimum required hours of service and training by last day of coach contract
•Attendance at the Up2Us Coach orientation
•Completion of twice monthly America Learns reflection logs at an 80% level or higher
•Completion of bi-weekly timesheets
•Attendance at a day of service
•Attend/participate in Up2Us Sports trainings, meetings, and special initiatives
•Attend Coach Training Institute (date to be announced by Program Manager)

Uniform Policy:
Coaches must wear Up2Us Sports branded t-shirts provided by Up2Us Sports with AmeriCorps logo when coaching and at program sessions and events

$500 - $1500 monthly

Additional Benefits

If a candidate has participated In: • Two full-time service terms or their equivalent, the candidate will be ineligible for a third Education Award or other in-service and after-service benefits. • Four AmeriCorps National Direct or State service terms, regardless of whether those terms were served on a full or part-time basis, the candidate is ineligible for benefits. Additionally, a candidate cannot serve if: • Failed to disclose to Up2Us Sports any history of having been released for compelling personal circumstances or for cause from another AmeriCorps program, this will render him/her ineligible to receive the Education Award and may render the Coach ineligible for service with the Program. • Released for cause from another AmeriCorps program but was released having performed satisfactorily, the candidate may still be eligible for participation in the Program. However, this eligibility does not guarantee selection or placement.

• AmeriCorps is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent residents.
• Members must be 18 years old, or 17 with written parental/guardian consent.
• Members must have, or be working toward a High School diploma, GED, or its equivalent

• Prior experience in coaching or playing in team sports
• Ability to work well with youth ages 7-12 and engage them in activities promoting healthy lifestyles
• Strong Interpersonal skills
• Strong writing skills and proficiency with Word, Excel PowerPoint.
• Ability to follow instructions from supervisor or designee and multitask.
• Ability to work within a team as well as autonomously once tasks are assigned
• Spanish speaking skills, are strongly preferred
