One in five adults in Texas cannot read or write well enough to fill out a job application, and less than 5% of those adults have access to the educational services they need. Become part of the Texas Family Literacy AmeriCorps team and help Central Texans build essential literacy skills. Located in Austin and Houston, we offer a range of education-focused national service opportunities that are making a growing difference in addressing literacy needs across our region.
Our term of service lasts for 11 months, during which you will serve 1,700 hours. You will be paid a stipend of just over $13,992, broken into biweekly installments. You will also receive free health benefits and many professional development sessions. This training will help you develop teaching skills and other important skills such as networking and resume writing. Finally, once you complete your 1,700-hour term of service, you will receive an education award of over $6,000. The education award can be used to pay off student loans or to pay for future schooling.
At the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas, we view diversity as a strength. We encourage applicants from all backgrounds to apply.
Adult Basic Education (ABE) instructors help adults learn basic reading and writing skills. Classes are typically small and instruction is usually one-on-one. Generally, our students enroll in ABE classes as a precursor to High School Equivalency (HSE) prep. HSE instructors help adults who do not have a high school diploma and who are seeking to pass a high school equivalency exam (e.g. the GED). HSE instructors also work with their students one-on-one.
