Service with AmeriCorps is an enriching and educational experience that is unlike any other employment opportunity. A term of service lasts for 11 months, during which you will need to serve 1700 hours with one of the Literacy Coalition's community partner agencies. It is a great opportunity to work in the Austin nonprofit community and network with many different nonprofit organizations. During your 11 month term, you will be paid a stipend of just over $12,600, in bi-weekly payments of approximately $560. You will also receive free health benefits and many professional development trainings aimed at helping you develop teaching skills and other important skills such as networking and resume writing. Finally, upon successful completion of your 1700 hour term of service, you will receive an education award of over $5,900 that can be used to pay off student loans or to pay for future schooling.
ESL members will be serving with one of the Literacy Coalition's partner agencies teaching English to recent immigrants, refugees, and individuals wanting to improve their English skills. These members will be working with adults throughout the Austin community. Daily schedules can range from a typical 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM to a few classes throughout the day and night depending on the needs of the community being served.
Many of our ESL teachers will be working with native Spanish speakers. While Spanish is not required at all of our sites, knowledge of Spanish will help you in your service as an ESL teacher.
Childcare assistance if eligible, Education award upon successful completion of service, Health coverage, Stipend, Student loan forbearance, Training
In addition to the above benefits, the Literacy Coalition offers resources to help develop our members as teachers and to help them find employment after completion of AmeriCorps service. We provide a number of training sessions throughout the service year (at least one a month) ranging in scope from volunteer management to resume writing and networking workshops. In addition, members are paired with mentors who are experts in teaching in their respective fields, in order to help members develop their teaching skills.
