Become part of the Texas Family Literacy AmeriCorps team and help Central Texas families build essential literacy skills! Located in Austin and Houston, we offer a range of education-focused national service opportunities that are making a growing difference in addressing literacy needs across our region.
Our term of service lasts for 11 months, during which you will serve 1,700 hours. You will be paid a stipend of just over $13,700, broken into biweekly installments. You will also receive free health benefits and many professional development trainings. These trainings will help you develop teaching skills and other important skills such as networking and resume writing. Finally, once you complete your 1,700-hour term of service, you will receive an education award of over $6,000. The education award can be used to pay off student loans or to pay for future schooling.
At the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas, we view diversity as a strength. We encourage applicants from all walks of life to apply.
Early Childhood (EC) members serve in local preschools to help students aged 2-5 build skills in math and reading in order to be prepared for kindergarten. Members give pull-out interventions in math and reading to small groups. They also administer pre- and post-assessments to gauge student learning throughout the year. EC members have the chance to create and implement lessons and assist teachers in leading classes.
