Become part of the Texas Family Literacy AmeriCorps team and help Central Texas families build essential literacy skills! Located in Austin and Houston, we offer a range of education-focused national service opportunities that are making a growing difference in addressing literacy needs across our region.
Our term of service lasts for 11 months, during which you will serve 1,700 hours. You will be paid a stipend of approximately $14,279, broken into biweekly installments. You will also receive free health benefits and many professional development sessions. This training will help you develop teaching skills and other important skills such as networking and resume writing. Finally, once you complete your 1,700-hour term of service, you will receive an education award of $6,195. The education award can be used to pay off student loans or to pay for future schooling.
At the Literacy Coalition of Central Texas, we view diversity as a strength. We encourage applicants from all backgrounds to apply.
PALS is a parent engagement program that also develops early literacy skills in preschool-aged children. Through weekly sessions with coaches, parents of young children learn how to support their children's cognitive and social-emotional development. While full-time instructors are working with parents, AmeriCorps members work with their children to build reading and math skills in order to prepare them for kindergarten.
Members will be trained to create and implement lessons for their young learners. They will also take part in client outreach by going into the community and recruiting parents and children for PALS classes. Please note that the PALS program is only available in Austin. Proficiency in Spanish is required for this role.
