SySTEM REAL recognizes that all learners have important and individual strengths. Our approach leverages these personal strengths and interests as catalysts for positive change and growth across social, emotional, behavioral and academic goals. While programming to impact these goals is individualized, every individual is a precious and important part of our learning community. Students here are not merely receivers of services – they are active partners in the development and care of a school culture that supports all members. Restorative practices are modeled throughout our daily activities through our partnership with Maine Youth Court. Our Core Values of Safety, Respect, Responsibility, and Kindness are directly taught and practiced, and consistently recognized and rewarded.

About SySTEM REAL School AmeriCorps Program

SySTEM REAL is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and adventure-based Service-Learning program designed to increase academic performance among a population of at risk 3-12 grade students. The program uses design thinking and project teams to creatively brainstorm ways to address real community based problems. Projects will be developed by members in collaboration with students and teachers such that each project will be individualized to meet the needs of the diverse group of learners in each project team. Full-time members will be instrumental in spearheading the integration of new Maine Youth Court restorative practices. Adventure therapy is also a staple of our programming. The options are endless at our school. Whether it be culinary programming, surfing, or building robotic arms - our members are encouraged to bring their passions!

SySTEM REAL School AmeriCorps Program ’s Impact

The SySTEM REAL AmeriCorps Service-Learning Program places AmeriCorps members at schools throughout the RSU-14 District as well as at REAL School in Brunswick, ME to engage high-risk, disengaged, and/or alternative learners in grades 3-12. This program will increase academic engagement among at-risk learners through engaging the student body in active, hands-on, service learning projects and adventure therapy programming. Our program seeks to rebuild our students' battered self-concepts through inspiring an ethic of service to community, while sparking interest and aspirations within STEM fields.

SySTEM REAL AmeriCorps Program

A 3-year grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) will aid to serve under-resourced students in the RSU 14 School District through the SySTEM REAL AmeriCorps Program. 35 SySTEM REAL AmeriCorps Members will implement a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math)-based Service-Learning program with students identified as being at risk (grades 3-12) in four alternative school programs. AmeriCorps members will engage students in the "Design Thinking" process as they work to develop and implement innovative solutions to real world problems. AmeriCorps members will work with classroom teachers to integrate academic content and skills within the projects. SySTEM REAL connects the STEM-related service activities to the academic standards. In addition, the AmeriCorps members will leverage an additional 240 volunteers who will be engaged in supporting individual STEM-based service projects, providing logistical assistance and mentorship for the students, and addressing community needs in the process.
