The North Carolina Literacy Corps (NCLC) is a statewide AmeriCorps program designed to increase the capacity of school adjacent programs and education nonprofit organizations to support learning and academic achievement in North Carolina. Literacy Corps members collaborate with local staff to sustain and grow programs, develop systems for efficiency and effectiveness, develop program resources, and enhance strategies for volunteer management.

Each year, the North Carolina Literacy Corps recruits and places up to 20 full and half time members who commit to 11 months of service. Additionally, we collaborate with summer programs to support the service of 25 minimum-time members.

  • About Us
Members are placed in nonprofit organizations as collaborators. Our mission statement above provides an overview of our program goal which is to align the service year with capacity-building interests of local organizations. All of our partners focus on education of community members - some are children receiving academic support, out-of-school youth seeking credentialing or internships, while others are adults learning to read or speak English. We work with book provision organizations that get high quality, representative literature into homes and schools, tutoring programs that support children's academic achievement, afterschool programs that extend the learning day, adult programs combining GED and workplace skills, and teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages.

Our goal is to combine the best of direct service with capacity-building so that members learn about the places and organizations where they serve and their programs. We turn our direct service into capacity-building by adding research, volunteer training, systems for book provision, technology programs, and professional development to support local goals.
  • Our Impact
The NC LiteracyCorps is designed to improve the capacity of partner organizations to meet their missions. We focus on community-driven service activities and work closely with organizations to align AmeriCorps' capacity-building foci with community assets and service requests.

We measure impact through partner feedback and ongoing assessment. In other words, partners have the say in selecting service activities related to capacity-building and they also have the say in whether or not the service year built community capacity in four different areas: Volunteer Recruitment and Management, Sustaining and Expanding Programs, Building Systems for Efficiency and Effectiveness, and Resource Developing.
