  • Our Impact
Youth Leadership: Guided by our SCI youth leadership curriculum, SCI empowers teens in youth council programs to develop initiatives to address pressing community needs. SCI trains 213 teens in leadership skills, and engages 3,800 youth in positive community projects.

Volunteer Outreach & Community Events: SCI helps organizations increase their capacity to recruit and manage volunteers, and successfully implement community events that unite diverse community members. SCI recruits 3,700 volunteers and coordinates a wide range of community events, including multicultural celebrations, community series, and MLK Service Days.

Online Engagement: SCI implements community web portals, social media, and community outreach strategies that connect thousands of residents to opportunities to participate in civic life. Six SCI community portals and related social media connect 15,000 residents/month to community events & resources.

Training Social Capitalists: SCI also trains emerging adult community leaders to collaborate effectively, make connections, bridge differences, and nurture social networks to make a difference. SCI works with one ongoing group of grassroots community leaders and trains 100 community leaders through workshops and forums.

SCI AmeriCorps Programs

SCI AmeriCorps

The Social Capital Inc. (SCI) AmeriCorps program will address the need to increase social capital in order to improve the educational success of economically disadvantaged students. We have chosen to focus on the population of disadvantaged students because of great need and great potential that encompasses this group. Evidence suggests that providing an opportunity for leadership training, for service learning, and to build positive relationships with adult mentors can make a difference in social capital levels for such students. Members should increase the capacity of host sites to engage volunteers in roles that build social capital and increase opportunity for low-income youth. SCI AmeriCorps is an AmeriCorps state program administrated by the MSA. The program at Social Capital Inc began in 2007 and has continued to grow. The SCI AmeriCorps program anticipates having 25 full-time AmeriCorps members who will implement volunteer outreach and capacity building activities and help youth develop their social capital and leadership skills Members are divided into two teams, Youth Leadership Coordinators and Volunteer Outreach Coordinators. Position descriptions are provided. Priority communities for the SCI AmeriCorps program are Boston, Lynn, Fall River, Lawrence, Milford, Bellingham, Revere, Salem, and Woburn. We may be able to explore additional communities. SCI's mission is to strengthen communities by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives. We focus our social capital building efforts on supporting youth success and healthy communities, based on the evidence that increasing adult volunteers serving youth in need, and providing leadership training and community service opportunities for youth can contribute to their overall success. The goal of the SCI AmeriCorps program is to connect youth with relationships, experiences and resources they need to succeed. Members will achieve this goal by implementing volunteer outreach and capacity building activities that increase adult volunteers serving youth in need, and through providing leadership training and community service opportunities for youth. SCI AmeriCorps members are placed into one of two teams: Volunteer Outreach Coordinators and Youth Leadership Coordinators.
