I am a firm believer that mastering the small steps, no matter how seemingly insignificant, are what lay the foundation for successful, bright futures for refugees in the US. Too often, admittance to our country alone is seen as an indicator of improved quality of life for refugees. Refugee background individuals can and do still struggle to fulfill basic needs in the United States simply because they do not receive information on how to successfully navigate the complex systems (e.g. - healthcare, financial, housing, food, job) that provide the essentials to ease the transition into our country. I'm serving with Lutheran Community Services Northwest as a Notre Dame AmeriCorps Member to help ensure better integration outcomes for refugee background individuals and their families. At LCSNW, we work with refugees to help explain and navigate the systems that are often just as confusing for those born in our country. We guide refugees through "the little things" that are often overlooked in the integration process - e.g. job applications, bank statements, discounted transportation sign-ups, free lunch forms - and ideally provide a space where any who walks through our doors feels empowered to ask any and all questions they have about living in the United States.
I am taking a gap year between my graduate coursework and thesis years to better understand how nonprofits work on the ground. Once I graduate (and complete that monster of a thesis), I hope to commit to a career in refugee and immigrant services abroad or here in the United States.
