AmeriCorps VISTA for the Rural Economic Development Project

The AmeriCorps VISTA member will work with the RurAL CAP team and Native American Villages to create programs that have a direct positive effect on the villages’ local economy. These programs will be created by conducting a needs-based assessment of the local community and analyzing the community’s resources. From this, the VISTA member will present their findings to the local community and use the information gathered to develop concrete solutions that are catered to the community’s unique needs. Once the program has been developed, the VISTA will work with the VISTA that would be training the next VISTA on how to implement the program, thereby ensuring the success of the program.

Service Activities

AmeriCorps VISTA will
1. Identify communities that would be willing to implement the program.
2. Research what programs have been effective in other communities.
3. Conduct a needs based assessment of the community
4. Develop a research based program based on the needs of the community.
5. Find funding for the project by developing grants.
6. Meet with the community members to discuss the program and how it will be implemented in their community.

Community Need Addressed

Many Native Alaskan Communities throughout Alaska are struggling Economically. In a fast moving world, many get left behind. This has lead to economically stagnant economies that dramatically effect the lives of the members of these communities. RurAL CAP looks to change this , by creating a program that spurs in economic change in the communities.

Position Outcomes

The final result of this service would be a plan for a program that would be implemented the next year, which would create economic growth in these native Alaskan communities.

We will provide transportation assistance, a relocation allowance and pay for transportation in or around the Anchorage area. RurAL CAP also provides a 100$ housing allowance as well as affordable housing options.
