Project POWER, which stands for Putting Opportunity Within Everyone’s Reach, is seeking 4 dedicated individuals to fill our Summer Associate positions. Summer Associates provide increased enrichment, mentoring services, and access to basic needs to vulnerable youth in western North Carolina during our Summer Camp. Each member will serve a minimum 300 hours during a 2.5 month term (May-July 2020).

A program of Children First/Communities In Schools of Buncombe County, Project POWER/AmeriCorps has contributed to the success of thousands of young people across the area, and has provided meaningful service opportunities to hundreds of AmeriCorps volunteers since 1998. Project POWER/AmeriCorps has served thousands of youth with multiple activities designed to impact the high school drop-out rate in Buncombe County, including one-to-one mentoring, participation in the design and completion of service learning projects, and developmental training in conflict resolutions skills. In addition, Project POWER/AmeriCorps seeks to empower community members to increase engagement with youth with an extensive volunteer component that includes recruitment, training and support of volunteers.Services associated with Project POWER/AmeriCorps are provided by AmeriCorps members at community and faith-based sites, including public schools, non-profit agencies, and charter schools. Focus areas depend on the site. These areas include: Pre-K School Readiness, K-12 STEM, K-12 Literacy, and After-school and Summer Camp Leadership.

Essential Functions in Summer Programming
- Assist with Summer programming and Camps for 10-15, K-5 students
- Plan and prepare healthy snacks
- Transport students to daily activities
- Lead Activities and Chaperone Field Trips (Camping, Hiking, Skating, Horseback Riding, Zip Lining, etc.)
- Work with Community Partners to provide activities and field trips
- Create and implement enrichment activities that combat the "Summer Slide", reading and literacy, educational games, etc.

Project POWER/AmeriCorps provides specialized academic enrichment, volunteer recruitment and support, and service learning to the community and member development to our members. These components help increase the capacity of our local non-profit and school partners by providing trained, committed volunteers to provide enrichment and volunteer opportunities for community members and at-risk youth in Buncombe County.
