Playworks Mid-year AmeriCorps Member Part-Time

Description

This part-time Playworks AmeriCorps Member role brings healthy play and physical activity to low-income schools to create a positive environment for learning and teaching. Members are provided with extensive training and placed in an elementary school to work alongside teachers and school administrators to implement our on-site Playworks program. Members develop a strong school culture around recess by influencing, motivating, and building rapport with faculty, administrators, parents, and volunteers.

Members commit to serving a full school year of at least 450 hours. Members are on-site at a school for about 25 hours per week throughout the school year; serving for approximately four to five hours per day, four to five days per week. Members typically start service in December and serve until the end of the school year.

Living Allowance

$625 - $693 monthly

Additional Benefits

Individuals will be enrolled as AmeriCorps service members (see www.americorps.gov) Modest living stipend (paid out semi-monthly, with amounts varying by region) Education award up to $1,566 for use at Title IV college or university tuition or to pay back qualified student loans (requires completion of a minimum of 450 hours of service) Possible child care expense reimbursement (http://www.americorpschildcare.com/) Develop leadership skills and gain valuable experience for a career in education and youth development Make a lasting difference in children’s lives and your community

Education Requirements

GED

Desired Certifications or Qualifications

Be at least 18 years of age and have US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status
High school diploma or equivalent
Demonstrated experience leading and/or teaching groups of children with the ability to engage and inspire youth
Demonstrated commitment to national and community service
Dedicated to completing a full year of service (typically a 6 month school year and 450 hours of service)
Experience interacting with diverse communities and the ability to integrate into and existing school community
Knowledge of computer and internet based programs for use in communication and record keeping requirements
Access to reliable transportation (public transportation or personal transport) to/from assigned school
Candidates must clear a National Sex Offender Public Registry, State criminal check, and FBI background check
Successful completion of TB test (upon hire)
