Academic Reading Tutors provide quality one on one or small group instruction for students in grade K-3rd grade who are considered struggling readers. Academic Reading Tutors are trained by the Dubuque Community School District on specific reading interventions and strategies. These interventions and strategies are apart of the classroom curriculum and support the work the classroom teacher and staff are already providing the struggling reader. AmeriCorps tutors provided that extra support and attention to students who need it.
The Dubuque community has made a goal to have 90% of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders reading by grade level. The Dubuque Community School District uses DIBELS as an assessment tool in the fall and spring. The extra support AmeriCorps members can provide students can often be the push students need to be reading by grade level in the spring.
