Philadelphia Higher Education Network for Neighborhood Development seeks 20 AmeriCorps VISTAs to serve in 16 Philadelphia public schools and 4 key offices of the School District of Philadelphia to help coordinate and leverage community resources and support students, families, and teachers. VISTAs will spend the year building relationships with school communities and organizations in the city to identify needs within the education landscape and strategize around how to best address them. School-based VISTAs will support their individual school sites by planning and facilitating regular meetings with school partners, helping to coordinate school communications and events, and building systems to facilitate strong, sustainable relationships between partners and school leadership. VISTAs in the School District offices will work on specific initiatives focused on issues that affect schools city-wide, including attendance and truancy, family and community engagement, and opportunities for music and arts education.
ARTS detail: The AmeriCorps VISTA will work in the Office of the Arts and Academic Enrichment at the School District of Philadelphia. The work involved in this project includes communicating and collaborating with the vast array of arts partners already providing service to schools, many of which have been identified by the new Partnership Census. The VISTA will help the District work more strategically with arts partners as a whole at the District-level, paying particular attention the large-scale, city-wide arts organizations such as the Kimmel Center, Opera Company, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Additionally, the VISTA will also help inventory existing visual and performing art resources, as well as identify new potential partners and funding sources, with the long-term goal of providing more equitable access to performing and visual arts opportunities for all Philadelphia school students over the next three years.
