Description

This VISTA project is designed to ensure that all students achieve third grade reading competency and learn to love reading and learning so they can go on to achieve academic success in school and beyond. The VISTA member will help recruit volunteer literacy tutors, coordinate tutor orientation sessions and tutor placement, and manage the clearance process required of multiple school districts so volunteers are placed with students as quickly as possible for maximum impact. Working in collaboration with JCL’s program staff, the VISTA member will maintain open communication with JCL’s regional tutor corps and approximately 20 school partners throughout the school year to ensure more students have access to JCL's services, and for maximum program effectiveness. Thus JCL’s VISTA member will allow JCL to attract and place more volunteers in public schools so we can reach more children and increase their chances for academic success. S/he will also support JCL's parent education programming and organize book giveaways and literacy events to create enthusiasm around books and learning.

VISTA member will track program metrics (# of students, parents and volunteers), ensure that all tutor clearance documents are uploaded into JCL’s database and accurate tutor records are maintained. VISTA member will organize volunteer appreciation events to build a sense of community among JCL tutors and ensure that JCL maintains its high tutor retention rate of 79%.
