It is a nonprofit organization whose purpose is opening doors to opportunity so individuals can achieve their dreams, positively impacting the lives of high-risk youth and their families for 30 years. A part of fulfilling this mission is East Austin College Prep (EAPrep), a public charter school started by Southwest Key with the goal of preparing all students, regardless of economic background, for graduation and college and career success. In order to meet this goal, as part of the ACE: Aspiring to College Excellence program at Southwest Key, we are focusing on college access through writing with a student-led writing center in order to instill a college bound culture in East Austin, promote the written expression of ideas and develop critical thinking skills needed for college matriculation and persistence as a deterrent to poverty. The VISTA will be a practical activist putting his or her skills into action to make a difference, working with a diverse group of leaders and non-profiters, and have the rewarding experience of helping communities in East Austin. Be a part of this college bound identity movement and help cultivate the voices of young writers through critical thinking and creative writing! Occasional evening and weekend work required.
Member Duties : The Writing Center Support VISTA will build a school district-wide writing center by conducting a comprehensive needs assessment, researching best practices and engaging stakeholder support to develop the student-led writing center, recruit student leaders, and develop program capacity. The VISTA will also refine the program model and monitor data, track outcomes, and write grants to sustain the program.
