The Texas Adult Education and Literacy Capacity Building VISTA will build organizational capacity to fight poverty by increasing local capacity to serve eligible individuals in federal adult education and literacy (AEL) programs. AmeriCorps VISTA members will be responsible for building enrollment in AEL programs through developing strategic partnerships, creating marketing materials, conducting community outreach and recruitment events to build program capacity, and supporting the organization's student retention, retention research and retention strategies. This program serves individuals who lack sufficient mastery of basic educational skills to enable the individuals to function effectively in society; do not have a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent, have not achieved an equivalent level of education; or are unable to speak, read, or write the English language.

Service Activities

Members will build enrollment in AEL programs through the development of strategic partnerships, the creation of marketing materials, they will conduct community outreach and recruitment events to build program capacity, and support the organization's student retention, retention research and retention strategies.

Community Need Addressed

The goal of the program is to prepare adults and out-of-school-youth to obtain a high school equivalency certificate and prepare them to secure better employment and/or continue with post-secondary education.
