Northern Bedrock Historic Preservation Corps's mission is to develop enduring workforce and life skills through service learning in historic preservation and community stewardship.

  • About Us
Northern Bedrock was established in 2011 to meet two converging needs:
    1. an aging stock of historic structures and landscapes in need of maintenance and repair, and
    2. to create a pathway for young adults into the preservation trades workforce.
At a time when historic structures across the country are greatly in need of maintenance and repair the number of individuals knowledgeable in these preservation trades is dwindling. Our goal at Northern Bedrock is to engage the next generation in the preservation trades by partnering with skilled trades professionals doing historic preservation work.

At Northern Bedrock we utilize a corps model to address these two converging needs. Our AmeriCorps crews are comprised of young adults, 18-25 years old, who work during a six month field season on historic sites across the state of Minnesota. By integrating historic preservation training within the corps model, we provide young adults with the opportunity to explore diverse career paths through hands on experience and training in the building trades and historic preservation fields.
  • Our Impact
In order to provide hands on training and build a pathway for young adults to the historic preservation field Northern Bedrock partners with tradespeople in various building trades and historic preservation fields. These consultants, who we call technical specialists, provide technical training to corpsmembers and work directly onsite with corpsmembers to train, provide project supervision and complete work projects. Through these work projects corpsmembers receive hands on skills training in areas such as carpentry, masonry, log building restoration, plaster and cemetery restoration. In addition to onsite training and experience Northern Bedrock provides technical workshops and certifications for corpsmembers including OSHA 10, CPR and First Aid, rigging, and various skill specific trainings.
