YouthBuild/Open Doors Tutor

YouthBuild Spokane is a program funded through the Department of Labor. The goals are to help 18-24 year-old youth obtain a GED, develop work-readiness skills, and transition to post-secondary school, an apprenticeship, or a job. A typical day could involve tutoring YouthBuild participants (one-on-one and small group), helping participants develop job portfolios, and monitoring student attendance and participation. The position may also include working closely with the Next Generation Zone and Open Doors case management staff in helping students achieve goals and unleash their potential.

Service Activities

1) Tutor students working toward GED completion; assist them in increasing literacy and numeracy scores
2) Identify specific educational needs for students and help them make weekly academic and personal goals
3) Set up and facilitate small study/tutor groups
4) Help navigate post-secondary educational opportunities for students
5) Track classroom attendance and active participation; inform case manager of educational progress
6) Develop positive personal relationships with participants
7) Complete some administrative tasks relating to specific tutoring duties, including but not limited to, scanning documents and making copies of school materials and curriculum
8) Complete specific data entry tasks into online computer programs related to support provided to students
9) Provide education and resources to students as needed
10) Attend all Spokane Service Team trainings and AmeriCorps national days of service
11) Maintain accurate and timely reports and timecards

This position will address students dropping out of high school.

Position Outcomes

This service will result in students who dropped out of high school obtaining their GED and gaining work readiness skills.
