Off-Highway Vehicle Program Field Technician

Great Basin Institute (GBI), in partnership with Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Off-Highway Vehicles Program (DCNR-OHV) and Nevada State Parks Recreational Trails Program (NSPRTP), is seeking an individual to join our field team focused on providing Nevada’s communities and public land managers off-highway vehicle (OHV) education, training and outreach support. Year one project goals will include collecting statewide authorized OHV trail system map data across land agencies to create a comprehensive OHV trail map for the state of NV; organizing and holding regional OHV Summits that will provide community members and public land managers education and training workshops focused on OHV related topics such as Treadlightly!, safety, OHV registration program, improved cooperation for OHV trail design & layout, and requirements gathering for grant writing; and assisting DCNR in conducting a survey of local governmental entities and other interested parties.

The Field Technician will work closely with the State Program Coordinator and Field Crew Supervisor to implement assigned field projects and maintain strong lines of communication to ensure project progress is monitored and reported routinely throughout project implementation.

Service Activities

• Implement weekly field assignments under the direction and supervision of the OHV Program State Coordinator and Field Crew Supervisor;
• Assist Field Crew Supervisor with collecting map data from public land managers for authorized trail systems;
• Assist Field Crew Supervisor with verifying OHV authorized trail map data where known or suspected discrepancies exist through the collection of GPS data;
• Assist Field Crew Supervisor with collecting recreational points of interest, GPS and other attribute data for the program’s mapping project;
• Assist State Coordinator and Field Crew Supervisor coordinating and implementing regional OHV Summits

This position will be appropriate for an individual with education in recreation/resource management and will provide opportunities to enhance basic career skills such as project organization and communication, as well as field skills including use of GPS and maps and training/public speaking. Fieldwork will be conducted in a remote backcountry setting and may require strenuous exertion and camping. Weather and terrain conditions may be extreme (e.g., heat, cold, thunderstorms, steep terrain). The work schedule is anticipated to be Wednesday to Wednesday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to accommodate remote locations.

• Living Allowance (900-hour): $8,800 • Paid Health, Dental and Vision benefits covered 100% by Great Basin Institute • Per Diem: $15 per field day
