The mission of the AmeriCorps, Monterey County United for Literacy program is to enable Monterey County children to read well and independently by the end of the third grade so that they can read to learn in the fourth grade and beyond.

  • About Us
The literacy program targets children in Kindergarten through 4th grade in Salinas and South Monterey County. Each member provides tutoring to about 25-30 students per year to help them improve their English language development, vocabulary acquisition, fluency and comprehension AND develop the habit of independent reading. Each member is assigned to one of about 14 different school sites where the AmeriCorps program operates. The AmeriCorps service members are a team of 30 dedicated literacy tutors, who love to support their students and believe in the impact they are making in each child's life now and for their futures.
  • Our Impact
Each AmeriCorps member's primary goal is to improve the reading skills of each of their struggling readers and to encourage a love of reading. Student's and member's work together to achieve improvement of one full grade level in reading in 3-6 months.

Our team will work together to serve over 900 students per year, providing around 40,000 hours of one-on-one literacy tutoring, and over 500 students will make significant reading improvements of half a year to a full year or more of growth, putting them on track with their grade level.
