STEM Tutor (AmeriCorps)

Members commit to 6750 hours of service (15 hours/week) as a STEM Tutor either at a high school or college and partner with their site liaison to identify and work with those students at risk of failing their STEM classes. Each Member will provide one on one or small group tutoring and keep track of student progress. Members will receive education training throughout the year and participate in community service projects.

Community Need Addressed

Over 60% of high school students are not prepared to take college level STEM courses, and over 60% of college students do not pass their STEM courses, and thus choose not to pursue a career in STEM.

Position Outcomes

AmeriCorps Excellence in STEM (ACES) seeks to prepare students to succeed in their STEM classes by providing small group and one on one tutoring and mentoring to 700 high school and college students in 2020. Students who participate in tutoring with ACES will show an improvement in grades, capability, and overall attitude towards STEM.
