Construction and Community Assistant

The construction and Community Assistant will devote approximately two thirds of there service time engaged in construction activities. No previous construction experience is necessary, but a desire to learn is important. The remainder of service time will be spent engaged in community and civic engagement activities, mentoring members as they develop

Service Activities

1.Construction- Assist Construction Site supervisors and be trained in basics of residential home building
2. Community - Assist with opportunities for community/civic engagement including but not limited to planning and facilitating service days and projects.
3. Work with a team of two other full-time AmeriCorps members, twenty part-time AmeriCorps members, and six program program staff.
4. Upon MCC approval, transport members and materials to and from job sites, testing locations, etc.

Community Need Addressed

The city of Milwaukee faces a significant shortage of affordable, accessible housing. There are also over 14,000 young people between the ages of 18 and 24 who are not in school or employed. The YouthBuild program engages young people in education, career training, and community involvement while building affordable, accessible housing in the city of Milwaukee.

Position Outcomes

The Construction and Community Assistant will assist professional staff as, together, they empower young people to overcome challenges and move toward family sustaining careers through education and hands-on construction training while building homes for low-income families.
