Through my personal experiences and education in the humanities, I have realized the need to bridge the gap in educational disparities across the United States. The high school from which I graduated placed below average in both reading and math proficiency for the state of Texas, and I had friends who were not succeeding academically due to distressing situations at home. I realized during that time that I came from a privileged background with a safe, supportive home environment. Since then I have wanted to use my privilege to empower others to overcome obstacles and obtain a quality education. When I taught as an assistant with Texas Sprouts, I realized that imparting knowledge to students outweighs the difficulties of teaching. At Mount Nebo, I have become a mentor to several economically disadvantaged elementary aged girls, and the time I spend encouraging them has become the highlight of each week for me. I hope to continue teaching and mentoring children because I have enjoyed these roles in the past, and I want to continue making a positive impact in young people’s lives. I want to serve Austin in this capacity because I believe in young people, and I know that education is essential to providing future opportunities and personal growth.Furthermore, the opportunity to serve with Americorps would benefit me after I complete the program because I hope to attend graduate school for a master’s degree in social work. The experience of assisting disadvantaged children would provide a framework through which I could better understand the communities I want to serve as a social worker. Serving with Americorps would help me develop my own character, prepare for a future in community empowerment, and meaningfully contribute to the lives of young people.
