AmeriCorps Nutrition Education Specialist position in rural Colorado

Mt. Carmel would designate an AmeriCorps member to be the Veteran's Coordinator. This member will assist veterans in understanding the resources available and supporting them in accessing those services (technology support, names and phone numbers of organizations, contact people for various services available). The AmeriCorps member will utilize an office in the Champions Building, downtown Trinidad, to provide accessibility to veterans in the area. Mt. Carmel will provide training and resources through the Colorado Springs office and supervision of members by the Trinidad office to support our AmeriCorps members in providing optimal service with care and compassion.



Mt Carmel would designate an AmeriCorps as a Wellness Education Specialist. Mt Carmel’s community wellness programs include a variety of physical activity classes that include yoga, gentle stretching, tai chi, karate, and walking clubs. They also offer healthy cooking classes, diabetes and prediabetes education, chronic pain self-management, stress management and mindfulness, health talks, weight loss programs, creative events, and group interactions designed to support emotional health and connection.

Service Activities

• Provide education on food labels, healthy eating and recipe planning
• Provide education on the purchase of healthy food items
• Complete health and wellness assessments and goals for the family well in the program post and pre every 6 months
• Meal prep education and aid with cooking classes, physical activity goals and options
• Promotion of the program and program enrollment
• Meet clients where they are at and uphold the dignity of the client
• Check in calls and visits with clients and program participants
• Partner with local food growers to help clients learn self-stainable food growing practices
• Complete any paperwork associated with the program( surveys, data collection, pre and posttests, ect.
• Comfortable with entering into homes of the clients in the program. (assess food at home)
• Assist clients in completing and filling out applications as needed

Community Need Addressed

AmeriCorps Members help Mt. Carmel provides integrated healthcare, wellness, and community partnerships that attract business, promote cultural experiences, and create social opportunities. This position aims to educate families in reading food labels and cooking healthy meals. Members will educate clients on grocery buying power by price comparisons through label assessment. Other duties include assisting the client's capacity to care for aging family members. The AmeriCorps members will help strengthen the partnerships within the community.
