2022 Summer Learning Specialist

Members serve 300 hours (approximately 40-45 hours a week) at their respective sites over the course the summer. Each Minimum Time Kids on Course AmeriCorps will serve at a Kids on Course University (KCU) summer program site (an elementary school in Cedar Rapids, IA). AmeriCorps members will have the opportunity to provide classroom aid to struggling learners, perform direct tutoring instruction, and lead enrichments designed to teach valuable skills. Members will also help eliminate the distraction of hunger, which can be a barrier to learning, by overseeing the Summer Meals and Summer Backpack Program at their respective sites, serving over 50,000 meals a summer.

Service Activities

 Perform in-class and 1-on-1 tutoring sessions with struggling learners
 Support enrichment programming
 Perform Check and Connect sessions with students to assess behaviors, needs, and participation
 Perform scheduled mentoring activities such as lunch buddies
 Organize and implement large scale events promoting education or engagement – such as family nights
 Before and after KCU student transportation support
 Serve at a KCU aftercare partner site after 1:30 pm – such as the Boys and Girls Clubs, Jane Boyd Community House, or others leading enrichment programming.
 Implement Summer Operation Backpack weekend food bag program by packing bags and delivering them to the schools.
 This program may require the member to engage in additional allowable activities that support the AmeriCorps program design, and which help the program meet its goals. In no circumstance, will members be asked or allowed to perform prohibited activities.

The academic achievement gap between low income students and their higher income peers.

Position Outcomes

Students will start the school year in the fall without summer learning loss and will be better positioned academically to succeed in the classroom.
