We believe in bringing together persons of all ages and backgrounds to address the issues of homelessness and contribute to a community that is healthy, educated, safe, and self-sustaining.

About Front Steps - Keep Austin Housed

Keep Austin Housed (KAH), a project of Front Steps, affects positive change in the lives of children, youth, and adults who are at risk of experiencing, currently experiencing, or have formerly experienced homelessness. Specific groups include families with children, people with mental health and substance abuse issues, domestic violence survivors, adults with disabilities, veterans, immigrants, unaccompanied minors, the elderly, and chronically homeless adults.

KAH members are placed at nonprofits throughout Austin to serve as Case Management Aides, working directly with clients who are chronically homeless, staying in shelters, or living in transitional or supportive housing. Members gain professional social work skills by helping assess client needs, develop action plans to meet client goals, and provide resources and support in helping clients achieve their goals. In the process, members help empower clients in obtaining or maintaining permanent affordable housing and improving personal stability through the development of effective life skills. In addition, members educate the community-at-large on issues related to homelessness and access the support of community volunteers, in-kind donations, and financial contributions.

Front Steps - Keep Austin Housed’s Impact

Our key focus is obtaining safe, sustainable housing and employment for clients who are at risk of experiencing homelessness, have previously experienced homelessness, or are at risk of becoming homeless. Members work with clients to move them out of shelters, off the streets, or out of transitional housing into safe, sustainable housing. Clients are also given tools and supported in their goals of finding and/or maintaining employment.
