My inspiration for serving comes from my older cousin, who participated in an Americorps program in 2008. Her ten months of service work following her college graduation were very valuable for her, and helped her to discover both her new home and a new career path. As a recent college graduate myself, I now find myself in a similar position: eager to discover more of the country, engage in meaningful work, and gain exposure to new people, places and work experiences. In college, I was lucky enough to receive an amazingly broad education. And yet, for all its merits, my university did not require any type of actual engagement with the issues that were presented to me. In that sense, a service opportunity would function for me as the logical conclusion of my post-secondary education: taking the knowledge I gained in college and actually applying it to real projects and communities.
