The Island Institute works to sustain Maine's island and remote coastal communities, and exchanges ideas and experiences to further the sustainability of communities here and elsewhere.

About Island Institute

We envision that Maine's year-round island communities will thrive and lead as examples of sustainability.

To that end, the Island Institute is committed to:
1. Support economic resiliency and growth
2. Help retain and attract families and young people as year-round residents
3. Encourage networking among island communities and increase the exchange of information with islanders and about islands.
4. Facilitate the development of island leadership to support individual and community aspirations
5. Strengthen and support a culture of workplace excellence that is responsive to our constituents.

The Island Institute has six departments working towards these goals including: Community Development, Energy, Education, Economic Development, Marine Resources, and Media.

Island Institute Programs

Island Institute Fellows Program

The Island Fellows Program is one of the signature programs of the Island Institute. Since 1999, the Island Fellows Program has placed college and master’s degree graduates in Maine’s coastal and year-round island communities for one to two years. Fellowships provide a unique opportunity for recent graduates to apply their skills and experience to help build sustainability within communities whose way of life and identity face many challenges
