The Salvation Army Service Extension is located in Ottumwa, Iowa. Service Extension Units are volunteer branches of The Salvation Army in communities throughout the division where corps offices are not located. The goal is to provide supportive assistance to people during crisis situations and to identify other community resources which are available to provide additional help. The Community Resilience Coordinator is primarily tasked with the development of an innovative and best practice tested community engagement model to increase community resilience in service to emergency and long-term housing needs. The Community Resilience Coordinator will support the Service Extension Director with the development, maintenance, and implementation of a community coalition to address issues relating to economically disadvantaged and homelessness. This position will engage community partnerships in obtaining emergency housing resources within Ottumwa Iowa and surrounding communities; and developing a sustainable plan in securing long-term safe and stable housing and other resources within Ottumwa Iowa and surrounding communities. The AmeriCorps VISTA Community Resilience Coordinator will support the Ottumwa Service Extension Director to develop and implement a volunteer network and identify, engage, and support community coalitions to address those most in need relating to poverty, housing referrals, and capacity in the community. The VISTA will serve as a part of Volunteer Iowa's Rural Development and Opioid AmeriCorps VISTA project. Volunteer Iowa is a state agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. VISTA members with our program have the benefit of a statewide support network of staff, Commissioners, National Service Programs, fellow AmeriCorps members and a VISTA Leader. Members receive ongoing training, support, networking and professional development opportunities.
