While there is some flexibility to the start date, ideally the VISTA member will begin their year of service on 5/13/19. There are a number of benefits included: childcare assistance if eligible, relocation allowance, health coverage, a living stipend, multiple professional development opportunities, and the member's choice between an end of service education award or end of service stipend.
This AmeriCorps VISTA position will cover four different objectives: 1. Recruit and engage a variety of community sectors in local prevention services by collaboration with staff and AmeriCorps State Member, conduct a community prevention needs assessment to identify potential positions for volunteers and create volunteer position descriptions. 2. Implement a comprehensive community needs assessment for prevention services by working in collaboration with staff and community partners, assist in implementing the Tri-Ethnic Community Readiness Survey. 3. Increase community capacity to become engaged in prevention services by implementing trainings as well as utilizing social and web based marketing strategies to promote ASAC and best practices for substance use disorder prevention, treatment and recovery. 4. Participate in Ongoing Professional Development by continuing learning on various topics including but not limited to substance use disorders and mental health.
Community Need Addressed
Located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Area Substance Abuse Council (ASAC) provides accessible, comprehensive substance abuse services delivered with dignity, respect and professionalism to reduce the impact of substance use disorders.
These services will expand our prevention department and community’s capacity to effectively implement substance use disorder prevention services utilizing best practices based on current local data. Effective prevention services have been proven to reduce risk factors of substance use in the community, such as poverty.
