HCV AmeriCorps Member

HCV AmeriCorps will be providing direct service which includes: academic support, monitoring of student progress, and maintaining contact with caregivers. In addition, members actively engage with the Homewood community through HCV and partner events, community service, and by assisting with a team service project. This service is highly interpersonal and requires that members collaborate well with others. Members must be able to accommodate changing conditions and diverse points of view. Physical demands are similar to what a teacher experiences.

Service Activities

HCV AmeriCorps members are tutors. Members tutor up to 60 students in Faison Elementary, with the goal of increasing proficiency in math and reading. Members support teachers in the classroom, conduct assessments of daily progress of students, and collect data to track student and program progress.
HCV AmeriCorps members are mentors. Members support young people to set and reach goals. During school, members build relationships with students, especially in between tutoring and class settings. Members act as a positive role model to students in the HCV program.
HCV AmeriCorps members are connectors. Members meet with young people and families to link them with enriching opportunities. Members communicate with caregivers regarding student success.
HCV AmeriCorps Members are ambassadors. Members help Homewood Schools to create a culture of excellence and caring throughout the building and build upon Homewood Children’s Village’s existing partnerships with local organizations to serve more people. Members facilitate a group service project as well as participate in community events and National Service days.
HCV AmeriCorps Members are data collectors. Members are required to complete detailed paperwork, including weekly timesheets, day-to-day student achievement reports and monthly progress reports. Members will meet with their supervisors weekly to discuss their impact, monthly to discuss their progress, and will discuss their development and future plans during evaluation periods. Members will receive three performance reviews, an initial review, mid-term, and at the end of the term of service.
HCV AmeriCorps Members support schools and community. Members will be scheduled to support schools during some high activity events such as academic nights and Muffins for Moms.
Members are required to participate in pre-service and ongoing training sessions throughout their year of service. These include a pre-service training, weekly training meetings and monthly leadership/development trainings.

Community Need Addressed

HCV AmeriCorps members increase the amount and level of academic support provided to elementary school students who attend school in the area. Members provide direct academic support in core subject areas of literacy and math, as well as acting as positive social influencers that take part in the wider life of the schools being served.

Position Outcomes

It is our goal that 500 students will receive at least one interaction with one HCV AmeriCorps members over the course of the year. More specifically, members will work with students
