Land Stewardship Trainer

Under the direction of the Program Director, the Land Stewardship Trainer position will provide training and support alongside Quarter Time (QT) and Three-Quarter Time (TQT) AmeriCorps Service Members while also completing environmental stewardship service. This includes: developing and implementing in-field training opportunities, environmental education, field logistics support, and project partner satisfaction tracking. This position will have a special emphasis Natural Resources Career Development and on helping Members learn and practice technical field skills while encouraging a safe service environment.

Service Activities

i. Serve alongside QT and TQT AmeriCorps Members on environmental stewardship projects (minimum 50% of service).
ii. Support and mentor QT and TQT AmeriCorps Members during their term of service
iii. Deliver field and classroom-based stewardship and environmental education and natural resources skills lessons.
iv. Learn the history of Heart of Oregon Corps and the overview of each of our distinct programs in order to communicate with the community about who we are and what we do.
i. As a part of this, craft and cultivate an elevator speech that explains our organization and that can be adapted for various audiences and purposes.
v. Learn the details of the AmeriCorps program, including specific Program Performance Measures, to fully comprehend the job and the evolution of what we’ve done in order to help us continue to improve our program.
vi. Serve as an integral part of the team, which includes staff, QT and TQT AmeriCorps Members, and other Full-Time Members. This means being open to collaborate, ask questions, take initiative on projects, problem solve, and stay flexible throughout the service day.
vii. Take part in our AmeriCorps evaluation project.
viii. Transport Members and/or volunteers as necessary.
ix. Help plan, and implement, skills clinic(s).
x. Plan, pack-out, attend, and de-rig camping trips during camping season.
xi. Help with errands/field logistics and seasonal camp prep, as necessary.
xii. Recruit and train volunteers, speakers that pertain to projects and careers in natural resources/outdoor industries.
xiii. Coordinate with Staff on certificate and training opportunities for QT and TQT Corps Members.
xiv. Outreach and coordination with HOC partners to provide natural resource education, career exploration, and volunteer opportunities for QT and TQT Members.
xv. Develop and manage Service Learning opportunities to QT and TQT Corps Members.
xvi. Assist/deliver Member skills and improvement evaluations (field and classroom).
xvii. Assist with Corps Member orientation.
xviii. Collect and record data associated with Program Measures (Sponsor Surveys/Environmental PM data collection).

Community Need Addressed

Local opportunity youth need pathways to re-engage in education and the job market to improve their futures and the local/national economic vitality.

Local ecosystems are at-risk due to recreational impacts, degradation of watersheds and habitats, non-native species invasion, and intense wildfires.

As the Land Stewardship Trainer, you will be responsible for supporting Members in:
i. Classroom and Field Based Job Skills Training
ii. Safety and Logistical Support while implementing projects on public lands.
iii. Stewardship Activities/Environmental Education.

Position Outcomes

i. Deliver, organize and track project outputs (acreage, miles or trails/fence, etc.)
ii. Assist PD with delivering, collecting and tracking Project Sponsor Surveys for Environmental Stewardship PM’s.
iv. As a part of our dynamic program and environment, the Land Stewardship Trainer is also encouraged to create their own goals and project lists as related to their position description.

Credential or Certification

LSTs help develop and deliver skills clinics to our quarter time and three-quarter time members. These skills clinics are based on the technical skills needed to complete stewardship projects, such as invasive species management. Upon completion, members receive internal certifications.

Skills you will gain

LSTs will develop their leadership and mentoring skills while supporting crew members. They will learn necessary skills to complete environmental stewardship projects, such as: chainsaw management, fence building, invasive plant identification and removal, fire fuels reduction techniques, and trail maintenance.
