Habitat for Humanity of Iowa AmeriCorps Program

Habitat for Humanity of Iowa is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating and preserving homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all. Habitat makes homeownership a reality for low income families (incomes are 30% to 60% of median income) living in substandard housing by selling at 0% interest, community sponsored and volunteer built/rehabilitated homes to families unable to secure a traditional mortgage from a financial institution. Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. AmeriCorps members in our program lead new home construction and neighborhood revitalization projects to increase organizational capacity at HFH locations across Iowa, primarily by engaging more community volunteers. Members assist affiliates through recruitment, management and retention of volunteers as well as increasing the affiliate's organizational capacity to serve more families by recruiting and managing eligible families and developing organizational systems and procedures.

Habitat for Humanity of Iowa VISTA Program

Habitat for Humanity of Iowa's brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope. The VISTA project aligns with the Economic Opportunity - Housing focus area. The VISTA project seeks to 1) increase access to current programs and resources by expanding resources into underserved rural areas of the state and 2) develop strategies to increase donations that will result in more affordable housing constructed and repaired, and expects to benefit low-income Iowa families moved from poverty housing to decent affordable homes. VISTA members will contribute to the goals of the project by performing activities of capacity building at Habitat for Humanity of Iowa affiliates to serve more low-income families across the state.
