Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory’s mission is to further through study, research, publication, teaching and public display the knowledge of marine biology; to promote protection of marine life and the marine environment; to collect, classify and disseminate marine biological specimens.

  • About Us
Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)3 organization that provides marine life to schools and research laboratories. We also study endangered species and conduct research in mariculture, farming the edge of the sea. Today we are an integral part of numerous research programs all over the United States, Canada and Europe.
In 1995, due to continued strong growth in interest and attendance, GSML began a program to more strongly emphasize educational programs for regional schools, aquarium display and public visitation.
  • Our Impact
Wakulla County draws visitors from surrounding landlocked counties who may not have the appreciation of a coastal environment and value preservation due to not being exposed to the importance of these resources. A common challenge/prevalent problem is when people move to or visit Wakulla County to enjoy its coastal resources, if not originally from a coastal area these individuals may not have hands-on experiences that help them to value these resources and understand how their every-day choices can influence the health of the environment.
Through the direct service of our AmeriCorps Members, GSML provides residents and visitors throughout the region with education or training in environmental stewardship and/or environmentally conscious practices to foster growth.
