As an AmeriCorps member, you will dedicate a year of service, (August 2020 through June 2021), by immersing yourself in the culture and routine in one of our four locations. You will collaborate with diverse stakeholders to instruct and mentor students and help develop a community where our students will thrive. By providing individualized instruction to our students and developing relationships, you play an active and integral role in preparing them for college and beyond. This is a service role through AmeriCorps with regular full-time hours. Many of our students enter Great Oaks below grade level and this role requires hard work, creativity, and a dedication to helping students beat the odds.
Specific responsibilities include:
-Fostering student achievement
-Provide daily tutoring to several small groups of Great Oaks students
-Assess student progress on a regular basis
-Lead after-school student clubs
-Work with students to set individualized, student driven goals
-Building relationships with families through weekly phone calls and other communications to maintain an open conversation about student performance
-Attend family events to help further build the school community
-Assist with other activities and projects that directly impact student success, including providing in-class or curriculum support, organizing or leading after school clubs, or working with our culture teams
Community Need Addressed
Many of our students enter our schools several grade levels behind academically. Great Oaks provides every student in our schools with individualized small group tutoring built into their school day. The tutoring our students receive during their school day helps them to get up to grade level or beyond and to become prepared for college. It is our goal to send all our students to a 4-year college when they graduate High School.
The desired outcome is academic success, character development, and college readiness for all Great Oaks students.

Great Oaks Fellows are offered a housing benefit where they receive fully furnished shared housing (utilities included) for a nominal cost. Great Oaks subsidizes the majority of the housing cost. This is a unique feature of our program that sets us apart from many other AmeriCorps programs. Fellows are also eligible to receive an additional "Segal Education Award" once they complete 1700 hours of service as a member in good standing.
