As an AmeriCorps member, you will serve for the duration of an entire academic school year, (August 2022 through June 2023), and will immerse yourself in the culture and routine in one of our five partner schools. You will instruct students in either math or ELA, provide students with mentorship supporting their social-emotional growth, and help develop a school community where our students will thrive. By providing individualized instruction to and developing meaningful relationships with students, you play an integral role in preparing them for college and beyond. This is a service role through AmeriCorps with regular full-time hours.

Service Activities

Specific responsibilities include:

-Fostering student academic growth in math or ELA
-Provide daily instruction and mentoring to several small groups of students, a typical day has you working with 4 or 5 groups of students for around 50 minutes each
-Assess student progress on a regular basis
-Lead after-school student enrichment programming (clubs)
-Work with students to set individualized, student-driven goals
-Building relationships with families through weekly phone calls and other communications to maintain an open conversation about student performance
-Attend family events to help further build the school community
-Assist with other activities that directly impact student success, including providing in-class or curriculum support, organizing after school clubs, or working with our culture teams

Community Need Addressed

Many students enter our schools several grade levels behind academically. Great Oaks Fellows serve to provide each student in our schools with individualized small group instruction and mentorship that is built into students' school days. The support delivered by fellows helps students grow academically and socially in order to get up them up to grade level (or beyond) and to become prepared for college. Great Oaks' mission is to prepare our students for college and career success and the Great Oaks Fellows play an essential role in supporting students to reach their goals.

Position Outcomes

Students grow academically in both math and ELA proficiency. Students grow socially and emotionally becoming more confident in themselves and more engaged as learners. Students are aware of their limitless possibilities and are thinking about their future with regards to higher education and a fulfilling career.

The GO Foundation provides Fellows with an incredible subsidized housing benefit that is almost cost-free for Fellows ($100 per month will be deducted from your living allowance to cover housing). Fellow housing is shared housing, is fully furnished, and has basic utilities included. The GO Foundation subsidizes the majority of the housing cost. This is a unique feature of our program that sets us apart from many other AmeriCorps programs. Fellows will also receive an additional education award (Segal Education Award) once they complete 1700 hours of service as a member in good standing. All AmeriCorps members are eligible for state food benefits as well.

Through the GO Teacher Residency program, select Fellows can earn a Master's in Education degree and teacher certification.
