Service Year: The Flint Model

What Makes Flint Unique?

The national service experience in Flint is unique. We offer a place-based approach to service where our 200 AmeriCorps and 300+ SeniorCorps members are connected and working together to help accomplish community-identified needs. Imagine: a school that is served by members of the Flint Community Schools Corps, Reading Corps, Urban Safety Corps, FoodCorps, Coach Across America and Foster Grandparents. Imagine the wrap-around services and supports that can be provided to students! That’s an example of what we have in Flint. All of our service members have the opportunity to collaborate with each other throughout the year via the Flint National Service Accelerator gatherings, which focus on professional development, networking and fun. Members team up for days of service and other major projects. Across programs, members are colleagues, friends, and sometimes roommates! Additionally, Flint members network with national service alumni and supporters who are now leaders of the community. The Flint community has created a culture of service which enables our members to thrive and leverage their service years into something amazing. Will you be a part of the transformation?

What is it Like to Serve in Flint?

Service members in Flint have the opportunity to be part of something BIG. Members participate in an extensive network of people connected by service. Flint members gain more than just professional and volunteer experience from their service. They get the experience of a lifetime. Recently, Flint’s members have been recognized by several members of Congress and other elected officials. Members have cleaned the river trail alongside players from the Detroit Red Wings, our favorite NHL hockey team. They have also had the opportunity to meet Bill Basl and Wendy Spencer, from the Corporation for National and Community Service, and to hear from local and state officials who appreciate their service.
Your service experience in Flint can include:

  1. Russ Mawby Signature Service Project in May – a HUGE service project every May that brings together members from all over eastern Michigan
  2. Life After AmeriCorps Day – a day dedicated to helping service members determine how they will best use their service year to launch them towards their next step
