Service Activities

A year living intentionally, working to change the world! The Lawrence House Service Corps is designed to enable young adults to engage in living a life that matters, learning to connect their spiritual lives with work that makes a difference in the world. The LHSC program will cover interns’ living expenses and give them a year of practical experience. Interns will engage in the life of the community, the parish, and the world around them, developing spiritual disciplines to support them in a lifetime of service. Current agency placements include work with inner-city youth through the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Holyoke; addressing housing insecurity through Greater Springfield Habitat for Humanity; interfaith campus ministry through Five College Common Cup; supporting immigrants seeking sanctuary through Pioneer Valley Workers Center. Other placements are being developed, including work in the areas of environmental stewardship and justice, food insecurity, and inner-city parish ministry.

Community Need Addressed

The Corps members serve in local non-profits working to end homelessness, hunger, and poverty in South Hadley, live together in intentional community, and pray together and with the community in Southern Arizona. Through their efforts they do the work of justice while being grounded in the liturgy and support of the Church, and they gain the spiritual skills to live in intentional community. This opportunity for emerging professionals offers time for vocational discernment and the opportunity to seek and serve Christ in Tucson through service and community.

Position Outcomes

Our corps members finish a year of service with a broader understanding of social issues and a stronger sense of self. Agencies that corps members are placed at will increase their capacity to address needs such as community and non-profit development, homelessness, and refugee services.
