The New York Times summarized Algernon Sydney Sullivan’s character by writing “[he was a man] of never-ending desire to promote such projects as were for the benefit of the people.” I hope someday, a loved one might describe me the same way. Mr. Sullivan is the legacy behind the Sullivan Foundation, an organization that promotes “a life of service” and grants awards. I recently was very proud to have received a ‘Sullivan Award’ before graduating from Rollins College. Service is my passion. I have always valued helping those around me and I know that the enthusiasm, drive and positivity I carry helps those around me do the same. All four of my college years, rather than partying in Daytona, I went on “Alternative Spring Breaks” through my university. When I think back, all of the most important moments and the most important people from my college career have revolved around service. My passion started during my Freshman year. During my first “ASB,” I went to Soddy Daisy, TN where I built and maintained hiking trails with a group of fellow Rollins students. Every morning, we would wake up and work on the trail from 8am-5pm. Despite the fact that the work was grueling, it never mattered. Every shovel dig, and every sledgehammer crack was just one more step toward improving things for whomever was going to eventually walk that trail. I always try to remember that when done right, service can create positive change for everyone involved. When it comes to making a situation better for someone else, I work arduously and consistently. That’s what I hope to bring to where I serve: an attitude of perseverance, and a knowledge intentional, well planned work can make a difference. Last Spring, I decided I wanted to lead, and not just attend, my Senior year ASB. And in February and March of 2016, I led a weeklong service trip to Moab, UT for plateau restoration.
