Resilient Communities AmeriCorps Member

The purpose of this position is to recruit and educate populations across North Carolina in activities to assist in making themselves and their communities more resilient to impending disasters. Special attention will be given to recruitment of diverse local groups throughout NC. Positions are based all across the state, in rural, urban and tribal communities. Locations are not limited to but will be based in Charlotte, Greensboro, Durham, Raleigh, Wilmington, and Western NC.

Service Activities

Provide direct implementation of climate resilience related projects highlighted as needed by community or government organizations that will mitigate the effects of climate change or allow for increased resiliency due to the negative impacts of climate change.
Assist organizations in building relationships with diverse communities including civic groups, schools, church groups, and others on resilient community projects.
Assist in planning and conducting climate resilience educational events in the community to increase citizen education.
Give community presentations, and provide information to community partners about the importance of understanding climate change's impacts to their community.

Community Need Addressed

This position will focus on developing stronger communities facing climate challenges through addressing needed additional capacity building in local governments and nonprofits. Many of North Carolina's counties and local communities are facing significant climate risks and lack the capacity to address them with current resources. According to CTNC research, close to all 100 North Carolina counties have climate resilience risks as it relates to wildfires, coastal sea rise, urban heat islands, flooding, and/or social vulnerability.

Position Outcomes

The position will result in having more community and government organizations able to provide current and new services as it relates to climate resilience on either a larger scale, providing more effective programming, or making organizations more efficient in offering services.
